Mar Sanchez Ceramics

I grew up in Spain surrounded by handmade ceramics. My grandparents lived in Nijar, Almeria which is a very small village that was famous in the region for its pottery. The clay and glazes were made from the volcanic soil found found along the southern Spanish coast. As a child, I admired the local potters that were able to transform a piece of clay into useful and beautiful objects. I remember the smell of the traditional food cooked in the fireplace and served in beautiful plates and bowls; never two of them the same shape or colour. Household ceramic wares endured for generations. They were part of the house and the family, little monuments of our history. Despite loving pottery since I was very young, it wasn’t until I moved to Adelaide that I first laid my hands into clay. I loved it from the first day. Working with my hands and creating original, functional and unique ceramics that forms part of the texture of someone’s home is very rewarding.

Most of my work is finely thrown on the wheel to achieve minimal and delicate aesthetic.
